WHAT ACCORDING TO YOU OCCUPIES HIGHER PLACE : INTELLECT OR EMOTIONS?
This is going to be a very heated topic of discussion. First let me ask you ; what according to you , you feel occupies higher place? Whatever you think occupies higher place, please take a note of the same and please bookmark it in your mind.
My first question to all. Sometimes our mind is absorbed in fear - sometimes due to lonliness, sometimes due to the worry like - will my dear and near ones ever get cured from of illness, accident, some type of shock - may be psychological. What's the first thing we do - become scared, cry aloud, get depressed, become sad etc. This is the situation when we first encounter with the incident. After some days, the incident is registered in our mind and we try to overcome it. In the meantime what do we do?
For Example - One of our close ones is hospitalized due to some accident. The first thing after hearing the news which comes to our mind is that, " Are they OK?" " I pray that the accident shoud not be grave enough!!!"
What is all this? Nothing but emotions. Emotions come out when we empathize ourselves with the concerned person/persons.
In the above instance, let me make a slight change. In the similar situation as above without anthing being modified, I will say that the person who has been hospitlized is nowhere related to us. But...............but..........he owns a robot insead. A highly customized robot made only for him. It can do each and every single work for him. A very highly intelligent robot. Mark my words, "HIGHLY INTELLIGENT"
Due to this what will it do?Will it take care of him by going to the hospital?Or will it pray for him? Or is it that it will go to church and pray to Jesus for the man's welfare. It will do neither. As it is endowed with tremendous amount of intelligence it will think like this:- " My master has met with an accident. Why the hell should I help him? If he is alive he will still extract work from me.But if he is not alive, I can be independent. I have my wits. There is nothing in this world I can't do!!!" Unfortunately the master died and the robot was taken out from that house and destroyed and put to recycle.
This has become the plight of today's world. Empathy has becoming the word of past and indifference is gaining its roots everywhere. Human beings are becoming like a robot.But, as seen from the above example intelligence without emotion is meaningless.
In my second example, I would like to illucidate the example of children when being brought up by their parents and fortified with knowledge by their teachers. It is sometimes very awful to see the upbringing of few children who may be from the unprivileged society. The way they are treated by their parents and teachers is contemptible. Not only from the the unprivileged, sometimes, this sort of treatment is also seen in the middle and the upper societies. When these children grow up, they become a replica of the treatment they have received. They are highly independent, intellectual and once again, lack emotions. They forget the values of sympathy, empathy and morality. It will not be wrong to call them as Educated Derelicts. And the chain goes on.........and on..........
In this way, I feel that emotions occupy much of a larger value, qualitatively and quantitatively.Emotions can relieve pain, miseries and bring lot of happiness to others life whereas mere intellect only makes a machine of human beings.
I would like to conclude by saying that if we are the charioteer, intellect is like the reins through which the horses of emotions can be controlled. This is what makes one a good charioteer.
